January 29, 2026

Multan Sultans represent the heart of southern Punjab in the Pakistan Super League. The franchise from the historic city of Multan joined PSL in 2018 as the sixth team. They captured their first and only title in 2021 after defeating Peshawar Zalmi in the final. The team plays home matches at the Multan Cricket Stadium, which has a capacity of 35,000.

The franchise is nicknamed ‘Sultans’ and wears yellow and maroon. Under captain Mohammad Rizwan, Multan Sultans have become PSL’s most consistent team. They reached four consecutive finals from 2021 to 2024, winning once and finishing runners-up three times.

Multan Sultans PSL Team Owners

The Pakistan Cricket Board currently manages Multan Sultans for the 2026 season. The franchise faced a major ownership change after former owner Ali Khan Tareen could not reach an agreement with the PCB for contract renewal.

Schön Properties originally bought the franchise in June 2017 for US$41.6 million over an eight-year period. The PCB terminated this agreement in November 2018 due to payment defaults. A consortium led by Alamgir Khan Tareen and Ali Khan Tareen then acquired the team in December 2018. Alamgir Tareen became the sole owner in 2021 and managed the franchise until his death in 2023. His son Ali Tareen then took over.

In October 2025, the PCB issued a suspension notice to Multan Sultans over contract disputes. Ali Tareen announced in November 2025 that he would not continue as owner. The PCB decided to run the PSL 2026 franchise and seek new buyers afterward. The expected base price is Rs. 180 crores, with PCB confident it will cross Rs. 200 crores at the auction.

  • Usama Mir – The leg-spinner earned the Fazal Mahmood Award in PSL 2024 with 24 wickets in 12 matches. He became the first spinner to take six wickets in a PSL match against Lahore Qalandars. His crafty variations trouble the best batters in the league.

The Multan Sultans Journey

Multan Sultans joined the PSL in 2018 as the sixth franchise. After finishing fifth in their first two seasons under Shoaib Malik, they improved in 2020 with new captain Shan Masood and coach Andy Flower, finishing third.

The breakthrough came in 2021 when Mohammad Rizwan became captain, leading the team to their maiden PSL title with a 47-run victory over Peshawar Zalmi. Shahnawaz Dahani took 20 wickets that season.

The Sultans then dominated in 2022, winning 9 of 10 matches, but lost three consecutive finals (2022-2024) to Lahore Qalandars (twice) and Islamabad United. Mohammad Rizwan scored 550 runs in 2023, winning the Green Cap.

Ownership disputes hampered their 2025 campaign, and they finished fifth in the points table.
