Rajasthan Royals are closing in on Sri Lanka allrounder Dasun Shanaka as a replacement for the injured Sam Curran ahead of IPL 2026. Shanaka will leave his PSL commitment with Lahore Qalandars to join RR in what marks yet another instance of a player choosing the IPL over the Pakistan Super League this season.
The deal is reportedly in its final stages, with only the NOC from Sri Lanka Cricket and PSL-related paperwork remaining.
Why Do Rajasthan Royals Need Dasun Shanaka
Curran joined Rajasthan in a high-profile move but has been ruled out of the entire season with a groin injury. His absence creates a major gap in the squad’s balance, particularly in batting depth and middle overs seam bowling options.
With RR’s opening fixture against Chennai Super Kings in Guwahati scheduled for March 30, the franchise needed a ready-made overseas replacement who could slot in immediately.

Shanaka fits the bill perfectly. The former Sri Lanka captain offers middle-order power hitting, medium pace bowling, and leadership experience under pressure. While he may not carry the same IPL pedigree as Curran, his versatility across departments makes him a functional solution to a sudden problem.
Another Player Chooses IPL Over PSL
Shanaka’s decision continues a growing trend this season. Blessing Muzarabani also left his PSL contract with Islamabad United to join Kolkata Knight Riders earlier this month. South Africa’s Corbin Bosch made a similar move last season, leaving Peshawar Zalmi for Mumbai Indians and earning a one-season PSL ban as a result.
The overlap between IPL and PSL schedules for the second consecutive year has put players in difficult positions. However, the IPL’s financial pull and global stature continue to win out when tough choices arise.
Will Shanaka Walk Straight Into the RR Playing XI
His place in the starting lineup will depend on Rajasthan’s preferred overseas combination. The franchise already has multiple all-round options in its setup. However, as a proven international captain with experience in high-pressure situations, Shanaka gives RR the flexibility they desperately need after losing Curran. The franchise will hope he can fill the void quickly as they target a strong start to their IPL 2026 campaign.
