1. Islamabad United

Islamabad United are the gold standard of PSL cricket. They won the very first PSL title in 2016 under Misbah-ul-Haq, added a second in 2018, and then clinched a third in 2024 under Shadab Khan. No other team matched that tally until Lahore Qalandars joined them in 2025. Out of 101 matches, they have won 55, giving them a win rate of around 54.46%. That is the highest among all teams that have played since the league began.

The key to their success has always been smart planning. They invested in strong all-rounders, kept a stable core across seasons, and backed their captains. Misbah-ul-Haq set the tone early with his calm leadership, and Shadab Khan carried it forward with energy and tactical awareness.

2. Lahore Qalandars

Lahore Qalandars have the most dramatic story in PSL history. They finished last in four straight seasons from 2016 to 2019, looking like a team that might never find its footing. But a complete rebuild changed everything. They reached the final for the first time in 2020 as runners-up, won their maiden title in 2022, defended it in 2023, and added a third crown in 2025.

Out of 107 matches, they have won 48, giving them an overall win rate of around 44.85%. That number is dragged down by those early years. In their title-winning seasons, they won between 65% and 69% of their games, which tells the real story of their rise.

3. Peshawar Zalmi

Peshawar Zalmi are among the most consistent teams in PSL history. They won their only title in 2017 by beating Quetta Gladiators by 58 runs in the Lahore final. That match was special because it was the first PSL final held on Pakistani soil. Darren Sammy led the charge with a quickfire knock that won hearts across the country.

Out of 104 matches, they have won 54, giving them a win rate of around 51.75%. They have reached the playoffs almost every season and appeared in four PSL finals (2017, 2018, 2019, 2021). But they lost three of those four, which is why they sit on just one title despite being so competitive.

4. Multan Sultans

Multan Sultans joined the PSL in 2018 and wasted no time making an impact. They won their first and only title in 2021 by crushing Peshawar Zalmi by 47 runs in the Abu Dhabi final. Sohaib Maqsood scored a brilliant 65 not out off 35 balls to set up the victory. Mohammad Rizwan’s captaincy brought structure to a talented squad.

Out of 79 matches, they have won 41, giving them a win rate of around 51.68%. What makes them stand out is their consistency in reaching the final. They appeared in four consecutive finals from 2021 to 2024 but won only one. That run of three straight runner-up finishes (2022, 2023, 2024) makes them one of the unluckiest sides in PSL history.

5. Quetta Gladiators

Quetta Gladiators made their mark early in PSL history. They reached the final in the very first season (2016) and returned to the final in 2017, losing both times. The breakthrough came in 2019, when they beat Peshawar Zalmi by 8 wickets in Karachi. Mohammad Hasnain’s pace bowling ripped through the Zalmi lineup, and Shane Watson was named Player of the Tournament.

Out of 104 matches, they have won 50, giving them a win rate of exactly 50%. Why Do These Teams Keep Winning?

  • Smart squad building is the biggest factor. Teams that pick players for specific roles rather than just big names tend to perform better.
  • Balanced team selection matters. Islamabad United have always focused on balance, avoiding squads that are overloaded with only batters or bowlers.
  • All-rounders and role players strengthen the squad. These players help fill gaps and can change the course of a match when needed.
  • Investing in local talent brings long-term success. Lahore Qalandars improved after building a scouting program that discovered young Pakistani players.
  • Strong domestic players reduce reliance on overseas signings. A deeper local pool allows teams to manage budgets and squad depth better.
  • Consistency in coaching and management is important. Teams that keep the same coaching staff are more likely to build a clear playing identity.
  • Frequent coaching changes create instability. Teams that change coaches every season often struggle to maintain a consistent system and results.

What Can Other Teams Learn?

  • Spending more money is not always the solution for struggling PSL teams. The key is investing in the right players rather than simply increasing the budget.
  • Karachi Kings provide a clear example. They won the 2020 PSL title with a balanced squad led by Babar Azam and Imad Wasim.
  • Losing the core group hurt their performance. In the following seasons, Karachi Kings struggled to rebuild their squad, leading to a decline in their win percentage and multiple finishes near the bottom of the table.
  • Data-driven decisions are becoming more important in the PSL. Teams that analyze match-ups, pitch conditions, and player form before drafts tend to create stronger squads.
  • Successful teams use analytics effectively. Islamabad United and Lahore Qalandars have both relied on data analysis to improve squad selection in recent seasons.
  • A strong bench is also critical in T20 leagues. Injuries, player rotation, and international commitments often affect team availability.
  • Depth in the squad helps teams handle setbacks. Multan Sultans reached four finals partly because they had reliable backup players for nearly every position.
